Priority Boarding

Anyone who has flown with the low cost airline Ryanair will know that customers that have purchased Priority Boarding are permitted to board first to avoid the long queues. Priority Boarding also guarantees your seat, along with a place for your hand luggage as there is limited storage in the overhead compartments. It is only a small price to pay for the convenience.

At the time of boarding customers are separated into two groups: PRIORITY (the short queue) and ALL OTHER PASSENGERS (the long queue). Everyone will feel differently about this, however I am always struck by the way customers react to the queuing procedures.

You can see from peoples expressions how everyone dreads the long queues, at the same time despising the PRIORITY customers. It’s all about convenience, and it does not matter as much in this simple analogy as all customers will reach their destination at the same time in any case. However, I was reminded today of the importance of being in the right queue for Heaven.

We are told in the Bible there are only two groups of people in the world: Those who are according to the flesh and those who are according to the Spirit.

Romans 8:5: “For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.”

It’s important to understand that Paul is not writing here about two types of Christians, but rather about how non-Christians differ from true Christians.

Jesus made it clear that there is only one track for the Christian life (Mark 8:34-38):

And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the Gospel will save it. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul? For what will a man give in exchange for his soul? For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”

It’s pretty clear that Jesus is talking about eternal life or eternal condemnation. If you want eternal life, you must die to self and follow Jesus. In Paul’s language, that describes a person who is “according to the Spirit.” The other track describes those who are “according to the flesh.” These are the only two groups in the world when it comes to eternal life or eternal death. Which one are you in?

It is a very important question to answer, for we read about the time of judgement in Matthew 25, where Jesus states that one day He will gather up all people when He returns to the earth as King (Matthew 25:31). He will then divide them into two groups – the sheep and the goats. He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left (Matthew 25:32). He will then say to the people on his right “Come, you that are blessed by my Father! (those who put their faith in Christ, lived a truly converted life and obeyed God) Come and possess the kingdom which has been prepared for you ever since the creation of the world.” (Matthew 25:34).

Christ will then state to those who are on his left “Away from me, you that are under God’s curse! Away to the eternal fire which has been prepared for the Devil and his angels!” (Matthew 25:41).

The sheep are of course symbolic of those who chose to repent, follow and obey Christ, while the goats represent those who chose to reject Jesus and His example on earth.
